Getting Kids on Track to School Success

The Overcoming the Odds Awards

> ANNUALLY SERVING 350 STUDENTS

The Overcoming the Odds project provides educational advocacy services to help resolve the school problems of students who are already experiencing significant problems which place them at-risk for school failure and/or dropping out. Some of the young people helped are:

•  ”non-traditional” students, including older dropouts returning to school, runaways now living on their own, youth returning to school after incarceration or residential placement
• students whose families are living in domestic violence shelters or foster care placements
• young people with school problems who also abuse alcohol or drugs
• kids who are having repeated or serious disciplinary problems at school
• students who are repeating a grade, failing several subjects and/or truant

The results of our service: improved educational opportunities. We resolve problems that prevent young people from entering or receiving appropriate educational services in school, thereby preventing dropouts and juvenile delinquency. In addition, the project empowers parents to work more effectively with their child’s school.
